Memorial Weekend Fishing Report

I had the pleasure of fishing with several groups this past weekend in Winyah Bay, many of which had never fished in saltwater before. Congrats to all the anglers who caught their first redfish, trout, and flounder. One of the highlights was a 34in redfish that George Hubbell caught with his family onboard, as well as a tagged redfish which we released and reported to SCDNR. On the same trip, a loggerhead sea turtle surprised us by swimming directly under the boat, very uncommon in the shallow estuaries of Winyah Bay. Menhaden have really started to stack up in Winyah Bay which the redfish seemed to be particularly interested in. We also go into a really good trout bite one morning, mostly larger females(Roe Trout) so the spring trout spawn appears to be well underway. The trout we’re more interested in rootbeer jerk baits and other artificial bait fish patterns. On the flyfishing side of things, the redfish eluded all of our offerings despite finding good numbers of fish and some excellent presentations, however my fly fishing anglers were rewarded with a nice flounder and a feisty lady fish for their efforts.

The weather and inshore fishing is excellent right now so make your plans to go fishing before the dog-days of summer set in. I hope to see you on the water soon!
